Travelogue: ˹Descendants of the Sun˼ filing sites
(Jeongseon County and Taebaek City)
While the blog had a renewal process, Gangwon blog went for trip to Jeongseon county and Taebaek city to trace the ˹Descendants of the Sun˼ filming sites 😀 So here is the travelogue to share with you!
Gangwon blog departed from Cheongryangri station in Seoul (Line #1 in subway system) and hopped on A-Train (아리랑열차). A-Train’s A stands for Arirang (아리랑) which is the traditional folk song in Korea. This song is said to feature the sorrow feeling of Korean people very much and has various versions in different cities. We believe that Arirang song was originated from Jeongseon county and spread out to other cities and varied.
A-Train takes up to 3 hours from Cheongryangri station to the destination, Mindungsan station in Jeongseon county. But the journey wasn’t really boring as there were many entertainments inside the train. Gangwon blog requested to play the music ,말해!뭐해? by K.Will, which is ˹Descendants of the Sun˼’s title song 😀
On the market day of Jeongseon 5 days market, the train would be very full and more entertainments would take place.Gangwon blog enjoyed the Kimbab (Rolled rice with seaweed) as well as assorted fruits in a cup and enjoyed the beautiful scenery out there.
Around 11:20 AM, Gangwon blog got off from train at Mindungsan station and hopped on the bus and moved to Samtan Art Mine. Samtan refers to Samcheok Tanjwa, one of major coal mines in Korea which used to be a main producing place of anthracite in ’80-90. Samtan Art Mine is a meaningful that the mine site became an artistic site despite its historically poignant history.
Gangwon blog visited the ˹Descendants of the Sun˼ filming spots. The famous spot will be ˹Venus from Bubble˼ whereby Agus kidnapped Dr. Kang in episode 12. The manager from Samtan Art Mine kindly explained that this place was a shower room for miners last time and artists got an inspiration to link ˹Venus from Bubble˼ to shower room. As we watched in a drama, the combination of old shower room and Venus statue create an unique vibe and featured Agus’s hideout place very well.
Another drama spot was for episode 3 whereby Mr. Kang who is a young construction worker was scolded by his supervisor to wear the helmet at the construction. The spot was for miners to take escalator to go downside of deep mine to do mining and very well-matched with the drama scene.
Besides the shooting location, many traces from the mine business were displayed. The huge fire extinguisher was to extinguish the fire if fire happens in mine and washing machines were to wash the working dress of miners. And the documents displayed are the application forms of miners in 1986. The phrase “We love our family, our country and our workplace.” sound very caring and touching:) Gangwon blog didn’t try but Samtan Art Mine has a restaurant selling the “Miner’s lunch box” and other dishes as pizza and spaghetti as well, so please come try if you have a chance!
Lunch menu was Gondrebap (곤드레밥). Gondre is a wild vegetable full of vitamin. Koreans steam the rice with vegetables or oyster as a special dish and eat together with soy sauce mixed with sesame seed.
Gondrebap is one of the dish as well and very famous in Jeongseon area as gondre in Jeongseon is called very soft and crispy. As expected, it tasted really great! Generous portion of gondrebap was served in a big clay pot and we scooped the rice to each one’s bowl. Gondre’s scent well mixed with rice and the other side dishes as stir-fried zucchini, radish Kimchi and seafood pancake were really great!
We kept on scooping the rice from the clay pot and had a pleasant lunch!
Next was Hanbo Coal Mine. Hanbo Coal Mine opened business in 1982 and led coal industry of Korea in ’80-90’s. By the slowdown in coal demand, it has completely stopped the operation in 2008 but has transformed into a shooting location for ˹Descendants of the Sun˼ and much featured well about view in the country called “Urk” which doesn’t really exist.
As per the news, the drama set was already demolished but reconstruction was in a process. Gangwon blog managed to visit the Medi Cube container box and tried the doctor gown like Dr. Kang (hehe :)) According to the explanation by Taebaek city hall, there will be total 7 drama sets completed and one of the drama set will be in a cafeteria style so visitors can come drink and eat the slow food in Taebaek.
Gangwon blog took a car and passed through the tunnel to see the other side, which was for shooting of Taebaek base scene. Surprisingly the view in Taebaek well matches with the scenery in Greece as well so many audience didn’t realize the filming was made in different countries.
There is less thing to see at the moment, so Gangwon blog recalled the scene of Taebaek soldiers running in the morning 🙂 and decided to make a next visit to see the complete drama set very soon. 단결!
365 Safe town is an experience center to understand about the natural disaster and learn how to react in the situation. As ˹Descendants of the Sun˼ had a scene of earthquake, Gangwon blog made an extra step to visit 365 Safe Town. 365 Safe Town are consist of 3 main zones where you can explore the outdoor program together with indoor program and said a combination of education and amusement.
There were many photo zones whereby you can act like you are in a disaster such as earthquake or volcano eruption. Isn’t it looking so real? ;D
Gangwon blog attended a class to learn CPR. It was very informative and fun! And also went inside the 3D theater to experience the earthquake. It felt super real like to be in that situation! After experience, a trainer explained how to react to the earthquake case such as earthquake doesn’t last more than 2 minutes regardless of the level and we need to keep ourselves in the safe places such as under the desk or the table to protect the head and body in the meantime. And make sure to open the door so we can escape after earthquake is gone also.
Next disaster experience was about the fire forest. We hopped on the helicopter shaped crafts and experienced to extinguish the fire in the forest just like fire fighters! Many fire forest cases were cased by mistake made by humans and it takes more than 100 years to be recovered back 100%.
After a trip in 365 Safe Town, Gangwon blog headed out for Taebaek’s signature item, at Taebaek Muldakgalbi (물닭갈비) house. Dakgalbi is stir-fried chicken rib dish, which is the famous in Chuncheon city in Gangwon. Muldakgalbi is different from normal Dakgalbi as it is more soupy style and has a unique taste. For Gangwon blog who already tried the normal Dakgalbi and Muldakgalbi 🙂 Muldakgalbi’s chicken texture was very tender and well matched with the wild vegetable on top of it, very fresh and crispy. It was like a hot pot dish rather than normal stir-fried Dakgalbi 🙂 After finishing the chicken and all, restaurant staff came to make a fried rice in the pan. As usual, it tasted super great!
