What’s so special about this Wish Tree? First we need to know the story of Muwollang and Yeonhwa in Gangneung city.
[Story of Muwollang and Yeonhwa]
In Silla dynasty, a girl named “Yeonhwa” in Gangneung fed the carp fishes in pond everyday. One day, a young Hwarang named “Muwollang” saw her and fell in love with her. He passed the love letter to her and she replied to him that she would accept him as a husband if he achieves fame and prestige.
Muwollang moved to Gyeongju for studies. Meanwhile, Yeonhwa’s parents tried to match Yeonghwa to other guy so Yeonhwa threw the letter to the pond then asked carp fishes to deliver it to her love.
Muwollang went to the market place to buy the fish for his parents and found Yeonhwa’s letter inside it. He quickly ran back to Gangneung and explained to Yeonhwa’s parents that he is her true love so two of them finally got bound together.
The “Carp” Fish
The “carp” played Cupid for Muwolang and Lady Yeonhwa in the story. The street is named after couple’s name as “Wol” from “Muwolang” and “Hwa” from “Yeonhwa”. You can visit Wolhwa street and write the good luck wish for athletes on the carp-shaped board then hang it over the rack. And we introduce the photogenic winners on daily basis through the Facebook page!
