Dear visitors,
Welcome to Gangwon blog!
We are sure that most of you wonder “What is Gangwon?!”, so relax and let us figure it out step by step.

You got it? Yes right, Gangwon is the province in Korea having Nami island and Mt.Seorak! We have total 17 administrative districts in Korea and Gangwon is under province category.

  • Seoul Special City
  • 6 Metropolitan Cities (Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Ulsan)
  • 9 Provinces (Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Gyeongsangbukdo, Gyeongsangnamdo, Chungcheongbukdo, Chungcheongnamdo, Jeollabukdo, Jeollanamdo)
  • Jeju Special Self-Governing Province

Shall we trace the origin of name as Gangwon? Normally in Korea, we collect the heading letter of 2 representative cities in each province and create the province name. Please refer to the map below:

Can you spot city name of “Gangneung 강릉” and “Wonju 원주” ? They are the 2 representative cities so we take the first letter of “Gang 강” from Gangneung and “Won 원” from Wonju to create the province name as Gangwon 강원

How far is it from Seoul? I will say it depends on where you are heading to in Gangwon as it’s a large province.

From Seoul to Chuncheon city whereby Nami island is located in, it takes 1 hour by train or by bus.

From Seoul to Sokcho city whereby Mt.Seorak is located in, it takes 2 and half hours by bus.
