Here we introduce top 10 delicious and hearty foods in Gangwon. Let’s check the symbolic foods in each city and county in Gangwon!
Chuncheon : Dakgalbi
Dakgalbi is a spicy chicken stir-fried in a round pan with vegetable as cabbage, onion, sweet potato etc. and it has been a beloved local food among Chuncheon citizens; Along with Dakgalbi, you’d need to take Makguksu which is a cold buckwheat noodle with a spicy sauce. Chewy noodle makes a great combination with stir-fried Dakgalbi. Dakgalbi‘s origin was believed to start around 1960-1970’s in Chuncheon from the college students who could afford the chicken rib BBQ with cheap price and it became famous of cheap price and delicious taste to other regions later on.

Pyeongchang : Hanu (Korean Beef)
Pyeongchang as 2018 Winter Olympic hosting city has the best condition to raise the cattle. Hanu(Korean native cattle)’s meat from Pyeongchang has the perfect marbling and juicy flavor. Even the delegates in Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit also complimented on Hanu‘s flavor. Pyeongchang : Buckwheat Pancake
1 more hearty food from Pyeongchang county, Buckwheat pancake. Buckwheat is a grain growing in the cool area and said to be efficient for detoxing and digestion. Pyeongchang as a hilly town is the perfect place for buckwheat cultivation so Pyeongchang people have invented many dishes of buckwheat such as buckwheat noodle, buckwheat pancake and even buckwheat tea also!
Buckwheat pancake is a pan-fried thin buckwheat dough filled with spicy kimchi and other vegetables inside. It tastes harmonized together with simple flavored buckwheat dough and spicy filling inside.
Inje : Hwangtae (Dried pollack fish)
Hwangtae is a dried pollack fish which tastes a bit similar to cod fish. Unlike other fish dishes, Hwangtae‘s meat has a very chewy texture since it is dried in the cold weather of Inje for many days. In the meantime, fish meat goes half way frozen and softened continuously- that’s the secret of the chewy texture. Grilled Hwangtae with spicy sauce in a clay pan is loved by everyone. For who has a serious hangover after drinking, you will need to drink Hwangtae soup to detox your body. The deep flavor of Hwangtae soup will cure your hangover in a moment!
Jeongseon and Taebaek as well-known for shooting location of <Descendants of the Sun> has a special food from the mountain. Gondre is a wild vegetable full of vitamin. Koreans like to steam the rice with vegetables or oyster as a special dish and eat together with soy sauce mixed with sesame seed. Gondrebap is one of the dish as well and very famous in Jeongseon/Taebaek area as gondre in these area is very soft and crispy. You can mix up the rice together with soy sauce and eat. Will it taste green? No, you will be amazed with great flavor of gondre and never stop scooping the rice!
Yeongwol is located in very Southern part of Gangwon and adjoined to Gyeongsangbukdo province. Yeongwol’s signature food is Ongsimi, which means a potato cake in a round shape. Yeongwol has the best environment for potato cultivating, so people have invented many different type of the food with potato. Ongsimi has a very chewy texture since it’s made of glutinous part of potato. People normally make a soup having ongsimi inside or red bean soup with ongsimi as well.
Sokcho : Snow crab
Sokcho having mountain Seorak is adjoined to the harbor and has a plenty of fresh seafood dish. One of the symbolic seafood will be called Daege in Korea, which is snow crab. Hoengseong : Anheung Jjinbbang (Steamed bun with red bean)

Of course we always keep the special place for dessert. 🙂 Don’t miss out trying Anheung Jjinbbang, which is the steamed bun with red bean inside in Hoengseong county. Anheung is a small town inside Hoengseong county and people started to make jjinbbang when Korea was in a condition of poverty since it’s easy to make with flours and red bean only. Thanks to the great flavor from the soft bun and red bean in good quality, it has become very popular nationwide and even other people in different city also request delivery service.
