Of course, we shouldn’t miss out the chemistry between the lovers as well!
So question to the big fan of the drama: did you know that some episode scenes were taken in Gangwon as well? If not, let’s take a look now!

Samtan refers to Samcheok Tanjwa, one of major coal mines in Korea which used to be a main producing place of anthracite. Samtan Art Mine is a meaningful that the mine site became an artistic site despite its historically poignant history. So let’s check find what iconic scene was taken in Samtan Art Mine.
Remember this scene? Agus kidnapped Dr. Kang and blackmailed her to break up with Captain Yoo (even with a shot gun!)
The scene was filmed in Samtan Art Mine as well. If you see the video carefully, you will see something like a faucet on the ceiling. This place was a shower room for miners and around 3,000 miners worked a day in 3 time shifts (meaning at least 1,000 workers showered together at once).
Why do we have a statue of Venus? According to Greek myth, Goddess Venus was born from the bubble in the ocean- this story gave an inspiration to an artist to link it to a shower room. “Bubble” and “Shower room” – makes sense, right?
Beside the shooting places, you can enjoy the ethnic art crafts from Africa and contemporary art gallery as well. The founder of Samtan Art Mine was a curator and collected art crafts all around the world for more than 30 years and opened the display to public.
In ’80-90, mine was the big industry in Korea and miners had a big pride in themselves that they are leading the industry of Korea. Though we no longer promote mine industry and many miners had to leave the work place though sometimes old men who used to work in mine come visit the place and walk around to trace their memory. Some of them burst out of tears as they recalled the hardworking memory last time. Another signature item in Samtan Art Mine is a lunch menu titled ˹Miner’s lunch box˼ which is the rice in a metal lunch box together with kimchi and other side dishes.
And don’t miss out the room that Song Joong Ki was staying. You can try to wear the uniform and take a picture as well 😀
Hanbo Coal Mine (한보탄광)
San 67-1, Tong Dong, Taebaek City, Gangwon-Do 강원 태백시 통동 산67-1

- Operation Hour : 9:00-18:00
- Transportation : From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, take an intercity bus bound for Taebaek Intercity Bus Terminal.

Hanbo Coal Mine opened business in 1982 and led coal industry of Korea in ’80-90’s. By the slowdown in coal demand, it has completely stopped the operation in 2008 but has transformed into a shooting location for ˹Descendants of the Sun˼ and much featured well about view in the country called “Urk” which doesn’t really exist. Due to the policy in Korea, the drama set had to be demolished after shooting. However, Taebaek city has rebuilt up the set for the visitors and construction will be complete by around end of July 2016.
Taebaek soldiers are strong enough to be stationed at Urk and at the same time, they are eye-catching as well! This should be girls’ fantasy though but as Dr. Kang and nurses mentioned, we would rather settle down if there were a such place 😀 While Dr. Kang was mesmerized with soldiers’ feature, Captain Yoo felt jealous and asked soldiers to go back to the base. This cute scene was taken in Hanbo Coal Mine drama set.
Currently the construction is going on and you can visit the Medi Cube container box to try the doctor gown like Dr. Kang.
According to the plan from Taebaek City, they will make 7 drama sets in this filming site so let’s wait for it to be complete drama set park! 😀 They also plan to build up the cafeteria with slow cooking food so the visitors can enjoy the slow life in Taebaek along with drama shooting place.
